English: Article: Sketches of the Sikhs. Illustration for The Illustrated London News, 4 April 1846. pages 4 and 5, Volume: 8 , Issue: 205. Article (part): CHIEF OF THE AKALIS. The Akalis (immortals), or Sikh fanatic priests, though considerably reduced in number, are much respected by the people. Their residence is at Akaligurgh-which was built by them-a large town a little south of the route from Ramnuggur to Lahore: here they live in a state of desperate independence of the Sikh Government, but they are tolerated on account of their ferocious valour in foreign wars.
